Government Department

The government is subdivided into sections to better organize the functions of day-to-day activities. These sections are called departments. An example would be the Department of the Treasury, which is in charge of collecting, managing and spending the revenue collected by the government. The police are under a local branch of government, within a well-defined area. Any specialized division within an organization can be deemed to be called a department. A government department then would be a division within the government that is responsible for a specific task.
