Small-Cap Building Successful Business

Monday, August 21st, 2006
By Mitchell Clark, B.Comm. for Profit Confidential

Earlier this year I told you about a small Canadian company that I really like. I would say that this company operates in the alternative energy sector, as it sells solar-powered lighting for all kinds of applications.

Frankly, I just love this company’s products.

Trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange in Canadian dollars, Carmanah Technologies Corp. (TSX/CMH) is based in Victoria, British Columbia, and considers itself a world leader in the design and manufacture of proprietary, solar-powered LED lighting.

The company’s solar-powered LED lights are usually self contained units that are designed to be extremely rugged. They are made to withstand extreme environmental conditions with virtually no maintenance schedule. Some models do not require battery replacement, bulb replacement, or servicing during the term of their installation (up to five years, depending on location).

Some of Carmanah’s lighting products are engineered to survive extended exposure to salt water and air, extreme temperature swings (from -40° C /-40° F to +80° C /176° F), shock, heavy vibration, and UV degradation.

The company makes solar-powered lights for use as water markers, airport landing strips, and even bus shelters. For its second quarter ended June 30, 2006, Carmanah generated record revenues of $15.84 million, representing impressive growth of over 140% over the comparable quarter in 2005.

The company booked a record $16.15 million in new sales orders during the latest quarter and has an order backlog of some $6.7 million going into the third quarter of 2006.

Earnings before interest, taxes and amortization (EBITA) during the latest quarter were $773,025, as compared to $447,471. Net earnings for the second quarter of 2006 were a modest $123,543, as compared to net earnings of $387,217 generated in the second quarter of 2005.

Carmanah Technologies is a classic example of an attractive small-cap company trying to build a successful business. The company boasts excellent products that are in demand, is well managed, and has a track record of success operationally and on the stock market.

As a consumer, all you have to do is look around you and you will see more and more solar-powered gizmos. Carmanah Technologies is a leader in this area and should be a great success over the next few years.
